SIEL2026: Conference under the theme “Editorial Partnership between Morocco and France”

A conference titled “Books by Four Hands: Rethinking Future Publishing Partnerships between France and Morocco” was held on Friday at the International Publishing and Book Fair (SIEL) in Rabat. The event, organized by the French Institute in Morocco, focused on strengthening editorial cooperation as France participates as this year’s Guest of Honor.

The discussion brought together publishers and cultural professionals, including Layla Chaouni (Editor), Mathieu Larnaudie (French writer),Ondine Cotto (French National Book Center - CNL), and Ange Mbelle (GVG Distribution). The speakers examined existing and future partnerships between publishing houses and the importance of creating stronger cultural links through literature.

Leila Chaouni emphasized the urgent need to make books more accessible to Moroccan readers by lowering prices. She also stressed the importance of providing greater visibility to African authors, whose works are ironically often more accessible in France than in their home countries.

Rania Marouki echoed these sentiments, noting that while collaborations with local publishing houses already exist, the work needs to be “scaled up to make books truly affordable.” She further urged for initiatives that revive African literary classics, reintroducing them to contemporary readers and ensuring their legacy remains visible.

The event concluded with participants reflecting on upcoming initiatives, including additional support that the French Institute is expected to integrate into its PAP program (Programme d’Aide à la Publication). Speakers highlighted that future partnerships will aim to broaden audiences while strengthening efforts to promote diverse authors on the global stage.
