At the international publishing and book fair in Rabat, a conference took place discussing the diversity and coexistence in Morocco. Moderated by Abdennour Kharraki, the discussion brought together well-known intellectuals in the field of translation Fatmi Abderrahim, Ahmed Mansour, and Abdellah Elboubekri.

The speakers started by talking about translation as a tool for connecting people from different cultures. Kharraki, Abderrahim, and Mansour shared their work of translation of The Ornament of the World” by Maria Rosa into English, while highlighting the intellectual and linguistic challenges that they faced, including

the stress to remain faithful to the original text without “oversimplifying its complexity”.

The discussion also included Al Andalus as a symbol of mutual existence and cultural exchange. The speakers highlighted its relevance in recent discussions about identity, noting how history reflects a model of diversity that continues to inspire.

El Boubkeri talked about his translation of Taha Abderrahmane’s “Dialogues for the future”, he shared the difficulties one can face while translating philosophical texts, stating that “many Arabic readers are afraid of philosophy because of its complexity”.

He pointed out the importance of making such works available and more accessible to people without losing their intellectual rigor, which is a very challenging work.

The conference ended with an exchange with the audience, with the speakers answering and sharing their own experiences to show how language can bring together histories and ideas across borders when used carefully.
