The International Book and Publishing Fair had hosted a meeting, to present a newly realeased book “Media and the 2030 World Cup” by Moroccan journalist and researcher Jamal Mohafid. The session was introduced by Saïd Montassib, who raised a central question: What do we expect from national media during the World Cup?
Montassib emphasized that Mohafid goes beyond viewing football as a game. The book explores the broader cultural and political implications of hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-organized by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal. Mohafid argues that sports media must rise to the occasion, addressing not only match results but also the narratives that unfold off the field.
The author critically examines the current performance of Moroccan sports journalism, suggesting it falls short of the standards required for such a high-stakes global event. He highlights the challenges facing the media, including the need to choose between investing in professional training for journalists or leaning into digital content creation and new media formats.
Ultimately, Mohafid calls for the development of a comprehensive national media strategy to accompany the World Cup, one that invests in youth and transforms the public’s passion for sports into a tool for economic and social progress.
As Morocco prepares to co-host this historic global event, the book highlights the exciting opportunities for the media to play a transformative role; not just in covering matches, but in shaping narratives that celebrate culture, unity, and progress. By calling for a dynamic and inclusive media strategy that embraces innovation, empowers youth, and leverages new technologies, Mohafid envisions a future where Moroccan media becomes a key catalyst for positive change, national pride, and lasting impact beyond
