On Saturday, April 26, at the Salon International de l'Édition et du Livre (SIEL) in Rabat, acclaimed Franco-Moroccan writer Leïla Slimani presented her latest novel, concluding her celebrated family saga.
Leila Slimani presented “J’emporterai le feu”, the final volume of “Le Pays des autres” trilogy. The event, which took place at the Salle Hiwar, gathered a large and attentive audience. The presentation was moderated by journalist Sanae Ghouati, offering an intimate and enriching conversation with the author.
Published by Éditions Gallimard in 2025, “J’emporterai le feu” continues Slimani’s exploration of identity, exile, and the search for personal freedom through the story of Mia and Inès, the third generation of the Belhaj family. Born in the 1980s, the two women must carve out their own paths in a world marked by new cultural codes, latent racism, and societal expectations. Like their ancestors, Mathilde, Aïcha, and Selma, they struggle to affirm their independence, whether through solitude or displacement.
With her characteristically elegant and powerful prose, Slimani brings to a close a saga that began with “Le Pays des autres” and continued with “Regardez-nous danser”. The trilogy has been praised for its vivid portrayal of Morocco's social transformations and its nuanced treatment of women's inner lives across decades.
During the session, Slimani discussed her inspiration for the trilogy, her writing process, and the importance of giving voice to generations of women navigating between tradition and modernity. The audience had the opportunity to engage with the author during a Q&A session, making the event one of the highlights of this year's SIEL.
Leïla Slimani, already known for her novels “Dans le jardin de l’ogre” and “Chanson douce”, which won the prestigious Prix Goncourt in 2016, continues to assert her place as a major voice in contemporary Francophone literature.
