As part of the Book and Publishing Fair, a tribute conference was dedicated to researcher Omar Amarir, a pivotal figure in the study of Amazigh history. Blending personal memories, academic journey, and cultural reflection, the event highlighted a life devoted to preserving Amazigh memory and promoting Morocco’s rich Amazigh cultural heritage.

As part of the "Masarat" series, April 18th was marked by an emotional and enriching gathering in honor of Omar Amarir, a prominent researcher into the history of the Amazigh people in post-independence Morocco. The tribute was led by Ahmed El Mounadi, with contributions from Aboulkacem El Khatir, an anthropologist and sociologist, and attended by personalities such as the intellectual and activist Ahmed Assid.

This event honored a man whose intellectual and human journey mirrors the major cultural transformations of modern Morocco. For many present, it was more than a celebration and a powerful symbol of recognition, one that reaffirmed the importance of Amazigh memory in the national narrative.

The session began with a joint presentation by Ahmed El Mounadi and Aboulkacem El Khatir, who retraced key chapters of Omar Amarir’s life. Born in the Souss region, Amarir pursued his academic journey in Fez, then in Rabat, before eventually settling in Casablanca. His movement across these symbolic Moroccan cities reflects not only a geographical journey but a profound intellectual quest for knowledge, rooted in memory and identity.

The audience also learned about Amarir’s rich body of written work, which includes several books that serve as reference points in the study of Amazigh history. His publications, which blend historical research, sociological insight, and personal reflection, are widely regarded as vital contributions to understanding the cultural transformations Morocco has undergone over the last few decades.

Speakers emphasized the methodical, rigorous, and humanist nature of Amarir’s academic work. As Aboulkacem El Khatir noted, the tribute was not only about honoring a career but also about anchoring memory, making sure that the contributions of researchers like Amarir do not fade into silence. It was a call to ensure that the work of memory and cultural preservation continues with as much intensity and passion as Amarir has shown throughout his life.
