A Special Symposium Highlights the Role of Moroccans Abroad in Promoting National Heritage
On April 23, 2025, the International Book and Publishing Fair hosted a symposium on "Moroccans of the World and the Celebration of Hassani Culture." The event brought together prominent cultural figures from the Moroccan diaspora to discuss their role in preserving and promoting Moroccan identity abroad.
Among the distinguished speakers was Nadia Yaqine, a cultural advocate based in Germany, who shared her experiences in defending and spreading Moroccan culture. She highlighted the importance of cultural salons like the Moroccan-German Salon and the Diplomatic Salon, where Moroccan heritage is showcased through collaborations with experts and diplomatic missions. She noted, "When we talk about Hassani culture, we are truly talking about Moroccan culture as a whole."
The symposium also welcomed El Habib Aided, an expert in Hassani culture, who shed light on the unique journey of Moroccans from the southern provinces who migrated at a young age seeking better opportunities. Many settled abroad but gradually lost strong connections with their roots. He cited the example of Hafedh Azbour, a writer who emigrated to Canada carrying with him the essence of his Hassani identity. In his literary works, Azbour poetically compares the experience of exile to the harshness of sand, reflecting the emotional struggle of being far from home.
This symposium stood as a testament to the unwavering commitment of Moroccans around the world to safeguard their cultural heritage. By sharing their stories and experiences, they continue to bridge the gap between the homeland and the diaspora, ensuring that Morocco’s diverse cultural tapestry, including the rich Hassani tradition, remains alive and vibrant for generations to come.
