SIEL 2026: Experts discussing publishing and AI challenges

The conference was held in the Ibn Battuta conference room, in partnership with the International Publishers Association (IPA). This event follows the opening of the International Publishing and Book Fair in Rabat (SIEL 2026), which tackled the critical topic of Artificial Intelligence and digital publishing.

Several international experts led the discussion, including Gvantsa Jobava, a publishing professional from Georgia; José Borghino, a senior figure in global publishing associated with the IPA; Tarik Slaiki, the president of the Moroccan Publishers Union; and Hicham Alami Ouali, a Moroccan expert in the publishing industry.

The discussion was moderated by Ahmed Rashad, CEO of Al Dar Al Masriah Al Lubnaniah, and focused on the impact of AI on publishing, intellectual property challenges, and new digital opportunities.

Hicham Alami stated, “Artificial intelligence can be seen as either a dangerous tool or an opportunity for success and development.” He added, “AI can help publishers with writing, but the main problem is the data that is collected and sent to AI companies.”

José Borghino explained that some individuals have already taken major AI companies to court over copyright issues. He also discussed how AI is being used and the specific challenges it raises for existing copyright laws.

Meanwhile, Tarik Slaiki insisted that “AI will do the impossible in the future.” He compared the current situation to when computers first appeared and many feared they would lead the world to ruin; therefore, he argued that the future of this technology could only be properly determined through the guidance of experts.
