At the Salon International de l’Édition et du Livre (SIEL) on Saturday, April 26, Hajar Azell, a Moroccan novelist, introduced her latest work, “Le sens de la fuite” (Gallimard), during a lively session moderated by novelist and editor Loubna Serraj.

Azell offers readers a polyphonic novel divided into three parts: "Rêve," "Révolu," and "Révolution." The story follows Alice, a freelance war journalist born in Algeria and living in France, in her search for meaning through conflict zones.

City after city, she had given herself over to the game of travel and chance. Why had she left the first time? For whom?" Alice begins her journey in Beirut in 2010, before moving reve to Cairo in 2011, where on Tahrir Square she meets Bassem, a journalist with whom she shares a passionate love story fueled by the political fervor of the Arab Spring. Determined to be wherever revolutions ignite, Alice relentlessly pursues her quest, pushing her own limits in Syria. Upon returning to Paris, an unexpected encounter leads her to Algeria, where she reconnects with her roots.

Through the vibrant portrait of a young woman, thirsty for life and attuned to the world's unrest, Azell’s second novel passionately explores the themes of flight and exile. Her narrative immerses readers into the joyful cosmopolitan energy of Lebanon, the revolutionary spirit shaking Egypt, and the suspended dreams of Algeria.

Hajar Azell’s rich, musical writing offers a deeply human and emotional perspective on political upheaval, challenging the idea that every revolution is a failure, and reminding us of the hope and resilience that persist.
