A Powerful Literary Debut Unveiled at the 2025 International Book and Publishing Fair

On April 25, 2025, the International Book and Publishing Fair dedicated a special literary panel to the newly released novel “Behind the Image” (Khalfiyyat Soura) by young Sahrawi author Hajar Baba. The event brought together literary enthusiasts and critics to explore the emotional depth and cultural significance of this emerging voice from the Moroccan Sahara.

Renowned filmmaker Mohamed Fadel Lferrouss, who introduced the novel during the panel, praised its powerful realism. He revealed that the story is based on real events experienced by a close friend of the author, set against the backdrop of the city of Laayoune. Fadel noted the simplicity and beauty of the language used, combining Moroccan Darija with Hassaniya Arabic, which adds authenticity and local color to the narrative. “The first chapter explores the pain of loss, with the death of the father and the struggles of the mother. The second chapter follows the protagonist’s entry into the labor market, shaped by the weight of early orphanhood,” he explained.

Hajar Baba, the author, shared the story behind the story. She revealed that Behind the Image was born out of a three-month writing program organized by the Forum Idafa (Addition Forum). While the novel is grounded in a real story, she emphasized her creative choices: “I incorporated elements of fiction to protect the privacy of the real-life protagonist.” Speaking with candor and passion, Hajar also reflected on the challenges of writing from the Sahara: “One of the things we lack in the desert is openness toward taboo subjects. I want to explore bold and sensitive topics in the future.” She admitted being surprised to be invited to the book fair, underscoring the humility behind her growing recognition.

“Behind the Image” is a touching and honest novel that brings to light real-life struggles in the Saharan context in Morocco. With her simple language and heartfelt storytelling, Hajar Baba gives a voice to stories that are often hidden. This novel marks a strong and promising beginning for a young writer with a clear vision for the future.
