The plural identities of the continent

"Africa is, first of all, a geography and then a political entity. We can speak of Africa as a space and a continent but when we speak of political Africa, it is several states, more than fifty. So, this gives us multiple identities, several Africans between the north and south, east and west, the tropics ... "

"Africa and its future: towards a new identity" was the topic of a conference held on Wednesday, June 8th, on the 6th day of the 27th edition of the International Book and Publishing Fair (SIEL). It was moderated by Mustapha Qadery, the historian specializing in social and cultural anthropology.

The roundtable was attended by Driss El Yazami, President of the Council of the Moroccan Community Abroad (CCME), Hawad, poet and painter (Niger), Nassuf Djailani, poet and novelist (Union of Comoros) and Nimrod Bena Djangrang, poet, novelist and essayist (Chad).

This meeting focused on a very important theme, the African identities and their permanent mutations. "Africa is, first of all, a geography and then a political entity. We can speak of Africa as a space and a continent but when we speak of political Africa, it is several states, more than fifty. So, this gives us multiple identities, several Africans between the north and south, east and west, the tropics ... ", says Mustapha Qadery.

A debate then began to illustrate the difference between someone born French on the French territory, someone Protestant from Chad, a minority within the minority, someone from Niger who declares himself to be Amazigh, a small minority, and then a Moroccan who represents this pluralism to some extent and who find himself there.

The objective was to gather the different points of view according to the background of each speaker, their country of origin and their own interests. Novelists, poets, journalists and intellectuals are interested in this question of identity, including the integration of colonial languages as national languages.
